The proposal allows the Festival Theatre to realise its ambition to create a purpose built rehearsal space on the site to the rear of the building which has remained vacant for 20 years. Through partnership with Ardmuir Ltd. the adjacent site will be developed as student housing in order to enable the construction of the Festival Theatre extension.
The limited original budget for refurbishing the Empire Theatre into what now stands as Edinburgh Festival Theatre excluded any rehearsal facilities and this prevents Festival City Theatre's Trust (FCTT) offering world class standards for visiting artists. It has long been the ambition of FCTT to rectify this omission and the positive support of the City of Edinburgh Council has ensured that land for this purpose has remained vacant and available to see that ambition realised.
The Potterrow rehearsal room will support the work of the trust in a number of different ways and, as such, will require to be a very simple but flexible space capable of operating independently of the Festival Theatre and capable of complimenting activities within the Festival Theatre.
