Dermot is an experienced architect specialising in the design and delivery of complex new and refurbished buildings. He has recently focused on a stream of projects for LDN Architects in the education sector, where his particular combination of expertise has proved highly relevant.
Prior to joining LDN Architects in 1997, Dermot worked in Terry Farrell’s offices in London and Edinburgh where he was Associate in charge of implementing projects in the Edinburgh Exchange Masterplan. All of these projects required strategic planning ability and a capacity to manage large teams of architects and sub-consultants. His experience with these new public buildings is now combined with expertise in the adaptation of existing building complexes. Most recently, this has included the delivery of the first phase in the major remodelling of the Supreme Courts at Parliament House. This involved the retention of Grade A Listed building façades and the creation of judges’ chambers and a library on six levels within. Some of Dermot’s other recent projects are:

University of Dundee Life Sciences Teaching Unit : Remodelling of two Listed buildings including replacement of all services infrastructure to create ten large teaching labs, lecture theatres, academic offices and a museum. £4.7M.
University of Edinburgh Management School : £13.0M remodelling and extension of the Adam Ferguson Building in George Square, Edinburgh.
George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh : Strategic Plan of the new Grassmarket Campus for new library, sports, music and junior school facilities.
Edinburgh Central Library : Development Plan to double the size of the library, including formulation of strategy for the delivery of City of Edinburgh cultural and community services within city libraries.
Edinburgh Business School : Design and implementation of new business school at Riccarton Campus for Heriot-Watt University.
Lady Eleanor Holles School, London : New sixth form resource centre including library and classrooms.
Dermot’s experience with the conservation of historic buildings now includes the preparation of Conservation Plans for the Royal Museum in Edinburgh, the former Royal High School in Edinburgh and the largest Scheduled Ancient Monument in Scotland, Crail Airfield in Fife.
Dermot was appointed Partner at LDN Architects in 2004. He plays a key role in the management of the practice and is actively engaged with the wider profession as Vice President of the Edinburgh Architectural Association.
