Tom Duff joined Law and Dunbar-Nasmith in 1977 after completing his architectural studies at Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, Aberdeen, where he graduated with First Class Honours. After working as a project architect and team leader in both Forres and Edinburgh, he became a partner in 1988 and moved to Germany in 1993 to set up the practice’s architecture and interior design office in Wiesbaden. He returned to Scotland in 1998 and is now based in Forres.
He has considerable expertise in design, technical issues, management, leadership and communication, and has successfully completed a portfolio of significant projects both in Britain and Germany. Design experience: Competitions and awards as student include a Civic Medal Commendation in 1976 for a Visitors Centre in Aberdeen and the RIAS Rowand Anderson runner-up prize 1979.
Design work and projects as architect include Bank of Scotland branches at St Andrews Square, Edinburgh and at Loanhead; alterations at 44/45 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh; and the extension of Birkhall House, Aberdeenshire.
Co-designer of RIAS competition winning entry for the Principal’s House, St Andrews University.
Design work and projects as project partner include Sunninghill House, Windsor, for the Duke and Duchess of York; Braulen Lodge, Inverness-shire; new housing projects in Zwickau, Sachsen; the remodelling of the Hotel Kosmos in Erfurt, Thuringen; and Urquhart Visitor Centre, Loch Ness.
Interior Design: Winner of the Scott Sutherland/Crown interior design prize 1975.
Partner responsible for interior design work and projects since Law and Dunbar-Nasmith acquired Innenarchitekturburo Hilger in 1993, including major interior alterations, office refurbishments, fitting out, furnishing and restoration projects.
Interior designs and refurbishment projects include Schwarzer Bock Hotel, Wiesbaden; Radisson SAS Hotels in Erfurt and Rostock; Hotel Ibis Dresden; Hotel Unter den Linden, and Bar 35, Berlin. Conservation Experience: Design work and projects as architect based in Edinburgh include St Machar’s Cathedral, Aberdeen; Dalmeny House, West Lothian and Darnaway Castle, Morayshire.
Project architect responsible for the rehabilitation and conservation of 12 of the historic buildings within 18th century Fort George, Inverness-shire. The project received one of Europe’s most prestigious conservation awards, the Europa Nostra Silver Medal in 1986.
As partner based in Wiesbaden, projects include the renovation and conversion to offices of two of Leipzig’s most important 18th century historic buildings, Romanushaus and Kotherinenstorsse 21; and the alteration and conservation of the 19th century theatre in Bernburg, Sachsen-Anhalt.
International Experience: Fluency in German and knowledge of the German building industry and methods, acquired as managing partner of Hilger LDN, our Wiesbaden office.
Member of Architektenkammer Hessen (AKH), equivalent to RIAS. Lecture presented on architecture and practice in Britain to an AKH sponsored conference in Wiesbaden covering most EC member countries in 1992.
