Knockando Woolmill in Moray is exceptional because it is the only surviving working example of a small scale rural textile mill in Scotland. In continuous use for over 200 years, by the time the community-based Trust took over in 2000, the condition of the category A listed buildings and machinery was extremely fragile.
LDN implemented a major restoration and development programme that conserved the fabric of the historic buildings and workshops and created new workshop, education and visitor centre facilities.
Both culturally and commercially, the restored Woolmill is an unqualified success. It has also won many architectural and conservation accolades, most notably a European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award, which is considered Europe’s highest honour in the field.
