Built by Sir James Matheson in the mid-19th century and later altered by Lord Leverhulme in the 20th century, the A Listed Lews Castle and its designed landscape are unique in the Western Isles and one of the grandest such developments on Scottish Islands. It has however lain empty for many years and its condition has deteriorated. LDN have prepared proposals for Western Isles Council to restore its fabric to house hospitality facilities and to create a new museum and archive facility for the Western Isles.
