The arts centre is formed wholly within the stone walls of a derelict maltings building in the centre of the historic town of Berwick upon Tweed. The site falls sharply across the width of the building with the entrance level on one side some five storeys above ground level on the other. The theatre is buried within the building where it is well insulated from noise by its thick masonry walls. A glazed pavilion on the top of the structure contains foyers and a flat floor hall.
