Awarded a National Lottery grant in 1998, Phase 1 of the works consists of the provision of a new single storey pavilion to the west of the existing theatre creating space for a new restaurant, and the upgrade of the front of house foyer and auditorium areas.
The new pavilion is sited so that the existing frontage projects and retains its oblique views up and down the river.
The space is naturally ventilated using a series of low and high level electrically operated grilles linked to the building management system. A more stable environment is provided through the use of a high mass concrete roof construction with good thermal capacity.
