Sail Loft Bunkhouse

Client: North East Scotland Preservation Trust

Abandoned since the 1970s, the collection of Category B listed buildings at Back Green, Portsoy was on the Buildings at Risk Register for many years before being acquired by North East Scotland Preservation Trust (NESPT). The Trust appointed LDN to assist with an appraisal looking at potential new uses and, subsequently, to implement a scheme which has seen the buildings repaired and converted to bunkhouse accommodation for visitors to the area.

Though much of the original fabric was lost, the former sail making factory, house and cottages have been sensitively restored, maintaining their original appearance where practicable and to conserve the industrial heritage of the site. Inappropriate 20th century extensions were removed and interventions were designed to be unambiguously contemporary.

Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Coastal Communities Fund and Historic Environment Scotland (through Portsoy CARS), the completed project is now operated by Portsoy Community Enterprise and has been awarded four star hostel status by Visit Scotland.
