St Benedict's Abbey

Client: The Santon Group

The A Listed Abbey at Fort Augustus was built after the 1715 Jacobite rebellion and enlarged after the 1745 rebellion. In the late 19th century it was converted and extended to form a Benedictine Abbey and operated as a school for much of the 20th century until it closed in the early 1990s. It was then developed as a visitor centre but this proved not to be financially sustainable and it closed a few years later.

LDN Architects prepared a number of options appraisals and feasibility studies to assess how the future of the buildings could be safeguarded and were appointed by the Santon Group to develop the buildings as holiday accommodation. LDN prepared a conservation plan and development plan for the site that was subsequently implemented in phases over a number of years.
