Edinburgh Festival Theatre

Client: Edinburgh City Council

“The best theatre in Europe” - New York Times

The redevelopment of Edinburgh’s old Empire Theatre as the Edinburgh Festival Theatre was a seminal project for LDN. Its design was the result of the practice’s long involvement in theatre design and conservation work and the completed project has continued to influence our design approach ever since.

The original auditorium, designed by Frank Matcham, was sympathetically restored and adapted with new infrastructure, and a new stage, fly tower and foyers were created to attract international touring companies and bring opera, dance and drama to Scotland. The theatre continues to operate at the heart of the Edinburgh Festival and the success of the project is demonstrated by the fact that it continues to be an enjoyable and stylish place to be, meeting and exceeding the needs of performers, audiences and operators.
