Crail Airfield

Client: Fife Council / Historic Scotland

Crail Airfield lies between the village of Crail and Fife Ness in the East Neuk of Fife. Its World War II runways, infrastructure and buildings which include an early version of a flight simulatord have survived to this time remarkably complete and the site has the extraordinarily atmospheric feel of being only recently vacated by airmen and soldiers. This completeness was recognised in 1998 when the site was formally scheduled as an Ancient Monument by Historic Scotland – the largest in Scotland.

LDN Architects were commissioned by Historic Scotland and Fife Council to prepare a Conservation Plan for the Monuments and we prepared a gazetteer for the site which described the history, condition and significance of each component. We concluded that the future of the monument would best be managed by de-scheduling the monument and re-designating it as a Conservation Area.
