Edinburgh Central Library

Client: City of Edinburgh Council

Edinburgh Central Library, a Free Library completed in 1890, is the best example of a Carnegie Library in Scotland. It is an outstanding work by Sir George Washington Browne, one of the leading architects working in Scotland in the late 19th century, which combines clarity of specialised planning with architectural excellence.

LDN Architects prepared a Conservation Plan for the building which analysed its developmental history and significance. The plan identified areas of the building which must be conserved, revealed and enhanced but also other areas of lesser importance that could be developed with greater freedom to ensure that the facilities continue to be relevant into the 21st century.
