Taymouth Castle

Client: Hotels International

Taymouth Castle is arguably the grandest Gothic Revival country house in the country. Formerly the seat of the Breadalbanes, it was designed by a who’s who of leading architects and designers including the Elliot brothers, William Atkinson, James Gillespie Graham and AWN Pugin. In the latter 20th century, despite a number of initiatives to develop it, the castle lay empty for many years and suffered badly from water ingress.

At the request of Historic Scotland, LDN Architects were commissioned by Hotels International to prepare a Conservation Plan for the Castle and a Heritage Impact Assessment of proposals to develop it as a 5* hotel. The proposals were contentious and LDN used the conservation planning process to help the hotel developer amend their plans and develop a sympathetic design that was acceptable to Historic Scotland.
