The Old Schoolhouse

Client: Private

This project is unusual through taking an existing extension to our clients’ home which they very much disliked and making it into something they have come to love.

Our brief was, originally, to demolish the existing kitchen and dining block - serving the former school - and replace it with a new piece of building. This proved to be beyond budget. Rather than abandoning our clients’ aspirations, we persuaded an exploration of transforming rather than replacing. The before and after images speak for themselves.

The resultant spaces - a reduced garage element allowing a minutely bespoke set of spaces for our clients’ exclusive use - are joined through introducing a link with an adjoining spacious utility room. The project is set off the original stone walled and slate roofed main house with an over-cladding of zinc to roof and walls with the more utilitarian spaces picked out in white render.
