Edinburgh Festival Theatre Rehearsal Suite

Client: Edinburgh Festival Theatres Trust

LDN Architects were responsible for the seminal conservation and redevelopment in the early 1990s of the Edinburgh Festival Theatre (EFT), arguably the first building in Edinburgh where meticulous conservation work was complemented by the highest quality of contemporary design.

The latest phase of development at the EFT was the completion of a large mixed-use development of the vacant site behind the Theatre to form a new multi-purpose rehearsal studio for the theatre, which has enabled the EFT to provide improved facilities for visiting performers, as well as attracting world-class companies.

The project has created a contemporary state-of-the-art rehearsal space capable of supporting theatre rehearsals, education groups, dance studios and performance space for an audience of up to 160 people. It had to be accessible from Level 2 of the EFT, to link into the existing dressing room accommodation, but also provide adequate support accommodation to operate independently from the main building. The studio is a flexible flat-floored space with a retractable seating system to create an intimate performance space. Despite this ambitious brief, the proposals were delivered within a fixed budget and tight programme.
