Conservation

Many of our projects relate to culturally significant and sensitive buildings, monuments, and places and an exemplary approach to conservation is at the heart of all our work.

We work hard to understand the significance of each historic place in order to ensure that we do not destroy what we set out to protect and our general conservation policy of doing as much as necessary but as little as possible ensures that change is managed properly; as much historic fabric as possible is retained; and design solutions are economic and value for money.

We recognise that architecture is an evolving story in which historical continuity and innovation are essential ingredients. We therefore believe that new interventions when required must respect the heritage asset and its history and significance but, equally, must be of comparative quality in their own right; appropriate and contemporary contributions to the significance of each place in the 21st century.
