Urquhart Castle Visitor Centre

Client: Historic Scotland

Strikingly situated on the edge of Loch Ness, the ruins of Urquhart Castle are among Scotland’s most picturesque and visually sensitive. They date from the 13th century and are visited by over 250,000 people each year. LDN designed the visitor centre to respond with ingenuity to the steeply sloping site in a way which minimises its impact on the setting. An extensive level of accommodation has been brought to the site, including exhibition areas, a community and education room, shop, café and a lecture theatre, the screen of which slides back to reveal a dramatic view of the castle.
